About Our Tom Curl, a Professional Farrier

Tom has been a professional farrier, and has been shoeing horses since 1972. Along the way, changes in the farrier industry led to many opportunities to specialize within the farrier business. In 1988, Tom was contacted to help with "Afleet," Sovereign and Canadian Thoroughbred racing Champion. Tom chose to glue an experimental set of shoes on the hind feet, which enabled Afleet to return to full training and set the program to continue for Afleet final year of racing before being retired to breed and produce many accomplished racing Thoroughbreds.

Continuing to travel and show the Hunter and Jumper, Thoroughbred, Standardbred, Quarter and Paint show horses, and Dressage circuits in the United States and Canada as well as many foreign countries, Tom Curl was quickly becoming the farrier to call for quarter crack repair. The specific art of repairing and patching a quarter crack is never taught in farrier schools and or veterinarian colleges, so when the time is of the essence of a sports horses career, owners need to travel to a hoof care specialist or fly them in.

Tom has worked from the east coast to the west coast of the United States and Canada, as well as Japan, Saudi Arabia, Bermuda, Brazil, Columbia, Cuba, France, Germany, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Belgium, and the Netherlands, racking up over Two Million air miles and countless car miles.

In 2006 Tom an experienced farrier was inducted into the "International Horseshoeing Hall of Fame," and during the first five months of 2008 worked to repair a quarter crack and wall separation on a thoroughbred champion "Big Brown." After sidelining the colt for 43 days, Tom got the hoof repaired and "Big Brown" returned to full training, which allowed him to win an allowance race at Gulfstream Park. Tom then decided to glue front shoes on Big Brown, and the colt was pointed for the Florida Derby, where he won, securing a spot in the Kentucky Derby. Tom worked closely with Big Brown's trainer and decided to glue the Colts front shoes for the Kentucky Derby once again. On May 3, 2008, "Big Brown" became the first horse to win the Kentucky Derby wearing glue on shoes. Tom Curl's specialized farrier skills is directly associated with approximately $37 million dollars in winnings.
